Tall Ships Chicago 2013 Festival

Tall Ships Chicago 2013 Festival

Welcome to THE CAPTAIN’S BLOG. This is the place to go for The Captain’s tips on where to drop anchor and find the best things to do and places to go in Chicago!

Chicago, it’s that time again, to get to Navy Pier for the annual Tall Ships Chicago Festival 2013! We are absolutely thrilled to be a part of this not only by sponsorship, but we get to see all the action up close and personal! Shoreline feels a certain closeness to this event because we all love the open water and sea-life!

During the five day festival from August 7-11, 2013 an international fleet of tall ships dock up at Navy Pier. They come from all over North America and Europe. While Chicagoans do love the Great Lakes -Lake Michigan most of all of course – we are not by any oceans and rarely see magnificent ships like the ones that are coming. This is the opportunity of the summer to experience what it is like to be a sailor!

One great aspect of this festival is the options of what to do. Not only is it on Navy Pier, which has endless opportunities as it is, but the Tall Ships Festival really thinks about its audience and lets YOU choose how you spend your day at the event.

There are four different ways to enjoy this event:

  • General Admission: which includes one day’s entrance to the festival and the Chicago Match Cup, this does not include dockside ship boarding.
  • Dockside Boarding Admission: this makes your Tall Ships experience even more memorable by walking on the decks of these monumental vessels.
  • Sail Away Cruise: Get a taste of life at sea and book a cruise aboard a Tall Ship! 75- and 120-minute sails are available on the Appledore IV, Friends Good Will, Lynx, Hindu, Denis Sullivan and Red Witch!
  • Parade of Sail Cruises: This means you can actually participate in the parade of ships!  Step out of the ordinary and set sail on a Tall Ship in the Parade of Sail on Wednesday, August 7 as the fleet arrives on the Chicago lakefront to dock at Navy Pier. This four-hour experience promises views and memories for a lifetime.

Some other ways to check out Tall Ships Chicago 2013 are the events within the festival! The Chicago Match Cup is a new event that will take place inside the festival grounds as 12 of the world’s best teams compete against each other in the Chicago Match Cup. This professional match race sailing competition is the only U.S. stop on the Alpari World Match Racing Tour.

One more thing to think about… summertime in the city is always busy! How about instead of looking for parking near the Pier, take a Shoreline Water Taxi! This is a fun way to start your day off in the water, which is very fitting considering the event. We have several locations like the Michigan Ave. Bridge, Navy Pier’s “Dock Street, Polk Bros Park at Navy Pier, Museum Campus, Willis (Sears) Tower/Union Station. This is great for anyone traveling from the suburbs too!

Relaxing, memorable and educational are just some of the words to describe this event. We cannot wait until Tall Ships Chicago 2013 begins, the summer is on its last month so let’s celebrate at Navy Pier!
