See Al Capone’s Chicago
Have you always wanted to walk in the footsteps of world-famous Mafia boss Al Capone? Shoreline Sightseeing can take you on a tour of Public Enemy #1’s favorite Chicago haunts and habitations. Check out some of the great places in Chicago that will treat you like a real gangster!
Schaller’s Pump has been serving cold beer and prime rib to Chicago residents for over a century. During Prohibition, the nearby Ambrosia Brewery pumped beer into the bar through a hidden hose! The Pump has been run by the Schaller family throughout its history, with plenty of colorful stories passed down through the generations.
The Green Mill on Broadway features fabulous jazz, but that’s not all–a trapdoor in the building leads to a maze of underground tunnels that may have been used by the Chicago Outfit to hide illegal hooch. This nightclub was owned by Al Capone’s top assassin, “Machine Gun” McGurn. Come for the history, stay for the jazz combos that play until the small hours.
Fox’s Beverly Pub was originally run by Al Capone’s sister, Mafalda. While she may have not been involved in racketeering directly, she sure didn’t shy away from the men of the mob…or from handing out candy necklaces to the neighborhood children. Fox’s is now owned by the Fox family, serving up great Irish-Italian food.
Tufano’s Vernon Park Tap may have not been a Mafia hideout, but it’s still got that Capone connection–its founder, Joseph DiBuono, was Capone’s personal chef before he retired to start his own restaurant. The food is certainly good enough to please the pickiest Mafia boss!
The Renaissance Blackstone Hotel on Michigan Avenue might be the jewel of the Capone collection. It’s not just one of Capone’s favorite haunts–everyone who’s anyone in Chicago has stayed here! The Renaissance Blackstone doesn’t shy away from its past, offering a complete package of gangster history with cocktails and a DVD.
