National Plan for Vacation Day

National Plan for Vacation Day

Growing up did you have a favorite vacation? Did you pack up the car every summer for a family road trip or did you spend a week at Disney World or go on an adventurous ski trip? Or was your family one of the 54% of American workers that left 662 million vacation days unused?

Today marks National #PlanForVacation Day – a day dedicated to encouraging Americans to plan their vacation days for the rest of the year at the start of the year. Launched by Project: Time Off in 2017, today provides an opportunity to come together to rally around the importance of planning for vacation. Vacations are an essential tool to strengthen personal relationships, inspire creative thinking, improve professional performance, and promote better health.

So what better time to plan your next Chicago vacation than today! We’ve put together a list of some of our favorite things to do and places to eat on your next trip to the Windy City.

Things to Do:

  1. Architecture River Tour
This is obviously our favorite thing to do in Chicago! Enjoy our 75-minute Architecture River Tour that explores all three branches of the Chicago River. Led by a professional docent, you’ll take in the history of the Chicago while being surrounded by the architecture.
  2. Museum of Science and Industry
If you’ve been to Chicago before but never visited MSI you’re really missing out. This interactive museum will keep you busy for hours and have you talking about how much fun you just had once you leave. It’s great for children but we even recommend adults visiting it as well!
  3. A Tour of Wrigley Field
Cubs fan or not, there’s no denying Wrigley Field has truly earned its nickname of The Friendly Confines. Take a tour of this historic stadium and then spend some time at the Park at Wrigley to see what’s new in the neighborhood.
  4. Chicago Food Planet Tour
Get to know the city on a more personal level – through food! Chicago Food Planet offers tours in various neighborhoods around Chicago, some you might not have even heard of. Visit the spots the locals love while you take a deeper look at the city.
  5. See at Show at Second City
Home to some of the funniest comedians, Second City never disappoints. You can catch a Mainstage show, visit UP Comedy Club, or see a student show at Studio Theaters – there’s something for everyone (and every budget).

Places to Eat:

  1. Deep Dish at Lou Malnati’s
While there’s much debate over the best deep dish pizza in Chicago, you can never go wrong with Lou Malnati’s. They’ve been in the pizza business since the 1940’s and have over 50 Chicagoland locations so you’ll definitely be able to find one around the city.
  2. BBQ at Bub City
Hungry for some good ole’ fashion BBQ? Look no further than Bub City in River North. The food makes you feel right at home and stay a little longer for the live music every night. It’s a one stop shop for a great night out in the city.
  3. Cocktails at Three Dots and a Dash
While they have a limited small plate menu, Three Dots and a Dash has some pretty creative cocktails for you to enjoy. A modern day speakeasy, you’ll have no problem enjoying yourself at this popular tiki bar right around the corner from Bub City.
  4. Date Night at RPM Steak
RPM Steak is a modern take on the traditional steakhouse and features a contemporary menu inside a beautiful dining space. Nothing on the menu will disappoint and you’ll want to go back for more the second you’re done. One of Chicago’s most popular steakhouses, be sure to make reservations well in advance when planning your trip.
  5. Modern Italian at Monteverde
You might be wondering what ‘modern Italian’ means exactly but once you sit down at Monteverde all your doubts will disappear. Imagine some of the best pasta you’ve ever had in small portions, meant to share with the entire table, so you can order as many dishes as you’d like.

There’s absolutely no doubt that there is much more to do and eat when you’re in Chicago but these are just some (not even all) of our favorites. We hope you’ve been inspired to start planning your next vacation – heck it is National #PlanForVacation Day so start planning!
