Explore the Largest Science Museum in the Western Hemisphere, the Museum of Science and Industry
There are few places in the world more inspiring to curious young minds than the Museum of Science and Industry, located along Chicago’s Lakeshore Drive. The largest science museum in the Western Hemisphere, it contains more than 35,000 artifacts and covers more than 400,000 square feet of interactive exhibits designed to amaze and delight both children and adults alike.
For anyone with a thirst for answers and a desire to get their hands on science, there is no place better to go in Chicago – and Shoreline Sightseeing wants to take you there.
A Long Standing Tradition of Curiosity
Established in great part due to a generous grant from, and tireless campaigning by, Julius Rosenwald in 1926, the museum opened its great doors to the public for the first time in 1933. Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry is the first in the country to feature hands-on exhibits that encourage guests to interact with – and learn about – the world of science and engineering. It has inspired many others and opened the minds of generations of young scientists in the 80 years since.
Exhibits that Will Amaze and Educate
MSI features a variety of exhibits – both travelling and permanent – that instill a sense of wonder and intense curiosity in its visitors. Some favorites of the permanent collection have been showstoppers for decades, such as:
- The Coal Mine – A staple exhibit since it was unveiled in 1933, The Coal Mine has been updated many times over past decades to display various methods of mining used through the years in different parts of the world.
- Colleen Moore’s Fairy Castle – A spectacular work of miniature art, the Fairy Caste features works from artisans from around the world, including Walt Disney himself! Visit the museum and take a tour of this tiny world of imagination.
- U-505 Submarine – The only German U-boat in America, the U-505 exhibit features a unique glimpse into German submarine technology at the end of the second World War. Through this exhibit, visitors have a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with a piece of history on a guided tour that takes you on board and into the very bowels of the ship itself.
