At Shoreline Sightseeing, we want you to have the best possible visit to Chicago. We are here to take you on some of the best tours the city has to offer, whether it’s a cruise along Lake Michigan or viewing the incredible architecture of the city from our boat on the Chicago River. After enjoying one of our tours, we hope you will wander this city we call home and experience all it has to offer. One stop that should not be missed is the Chicago Cultural Center.
Home of Amazing Chicago History
Completed in 1897, this building was Chicago’s first central library. Hoping that it would become a center of learning, culture, and beauty, the design included the largest Tiffany stained glass dome in the world. It is a stunning 38 feet in diameter and contains over 30,000 pieces of glass. If that wasn’t enough, there is also a Renaissance styled glass dome designed by Healy & Millet that is 40 feet in diameter and contains over 50,000 pieces of glass.
These domes are the gems of a building that even on its own is a stunning piece of architecture. The rooms are finished with rare and stunning marble, polished brass, rich and dark woods, all around a stately architectural style.
A True Center of Culture
While the building itself is cause enough to visit the Chicago Cultural Center, it also hosts innumerable and incredible cultural events. Be sure to check out what might be happening near your visit to Chicago. It is possible you could catch a classical concert, wander through an art exhibition, listen to a lecture, sit in a film, or witness a dance or theatrical performance. Almost every event hosted here is free, encouraging residents and visitors alike to engage culture in community.
