In Chicago, Navy Pier is one of the most frequently visited and beloved destinations in the city. Built in 1916, Navy Pier was originally designed as a cargo facility as well as a docking space for passenger excursion steamers. Before air conditioning, sections of the pier, particularly the outermost tip, were cool places for public gatherings. Today, the purpose of Navy Pier is much different, as it is now Chicago’s number one tourist attraction.
Navy Pier Attractions
More than 8.9 million people visited Navy Pier in 2013 to take in the beauty of Lake Michigan and to have a fun, memorable experience. Navy Pier attractions are quite diverse. From museums and theaters to shopping and dining, there is something for everyone at this popular Chicago landmark.
In addition to the iconic Ferris wheel and all the other attractions Navy Pier has to offer, it is also a premier destination for special events. From April 11 through April 20, families can Swing Into Spring at Navy Pier with live animals from PAWS Chicago, the Anti-Cruelty Society, and Brookfield Zoo. For adults, there is Pinot Days on April 26, where you can enjoy great food and wine, or the Navy Pier Cornhole Classic beanbag tournament on May 3.
